Burroughs and Watts steel block full size for sale just £500 ! NOW SOLD WE THINK ! plus a word of warning about DIY removals of a snooker table.

SOLD ! after just one day .

Another table spotted on GCL Billiards web site sold from the advertisement , this table I am informed is being collected on Tuesday of Next week , GCL billiards did not get the work of moving the table , in fact we where never asked to quote for it , so I suspect the new owner is picking the table up themselves having had some experience of dismantling tables ? or has a fitter already in mind before he got in touch with us.

that’s ok if you have the confidence and a little experience doing it , but for normal buyers who think picking a full size table up and loading is a breeze , your in for a shock .

At GCL Billiards we have the right moving wheels and Van , plus custom made slate slide protector if required , for safe Removal of any cuesport table use the Professionals to carry out the work.
We are also insured to move tables.
Above a photo showing well cared for and blanket wrapped and stored on board of our 1650 kg max load weight . do not forget any weight must include all passengers and Driver as well as the Cargo and tools.
I dismissed buying over 20 vans for not being capable of my line of work , before I decided to buy the correct one for the job.
My MWB / MRH / Vauxhall Movano can carry more weight than it’s long wheel base Brother and thats fact.

a word of warning for DIY removals . for the Buyer and the seller.

apart from serious injury from the heavy slates you also risk damaging the sellers property of which you will be liable for repair .
GCL billiards have the right moving equipment including the proper vehicle with a cargo weight of over 1650 kg  . most vans including the large mercedes sprinter will be overweight with a steel block table on , some transits are also not within legal carrying capacity , get stopped by the law for being overweight and you have to unload there and then the excess weight , a large fine and points on your license .

we did put  the buyer who is local to me in touch with the seller to get the result of this sale though and that proves people do look at the for sale section of GCL billiards .
So if you have a table for sale or wish to dispose of , please contact Geoff at GCL billiards to place your advertisement , please send photo’s of your table taken with a digital camera and not a mobile phone though, as most mobiles lock the photo and prevent copy.

ORIGINAL ADVERT

We have a client based in Sunderland who inherited a full size table with the house they moved into 20 years ago
Although they have lived with the table for so long they now wish to renovate the room it is in for other purpose
This table is circa 1900 / 1910 and has the most craved for cushions in the Billiard table industry , the steel block cushions .
Now if this table was just a standard table I would be advising my client to just give it away , but the fact it has those steel cushions on and good welsh slate means it has some value .
and you will be amazed at how many people want to upgrade from standard cushions to steel cushions .
So you have  a choice , buy the table as a project to renovate , or buy it for the steels to go on your own table and recycle the rest .
This table is based in Sunderland so please work out any mileage costs to collect the table .
GCL billiards will be happy to quote for collection of this table , just provide Geoff with your post code and he will work out a price for you .
Please have a look at the following photo’s , you can see it would require a new cloth , new rubber , new nets and leathers and maybe rails .
plus any woodwork repairs .
But at £500 it is well worth the price just for the cushions .
any buyer would have the reasonability of arranging  removal of  the whole table from site which is on a ground floor location .

Some very nice flame mahogany has been used in the construction of this table

the old badge is faded , but you can still make out the name Burroughs & Watts Ltd and the lower writing would have said Soho Square and below that  Patented steel vacuum cushions .
So there you have a nice period 1900 /1910 table made by one of the best billiard table makers in the UK Burroughs & Watts with those desirable steel cushions .
a snip at just £500 .
any one interested , please contact Geoff at GCL billiards by email c.large @btinternet.com , he will pass on your details to the seller .

please note , Geoff is ill at the moment but will be fit to answer emails by the weekend once his antibiotics have kicked in .

8ft x 4ft solid oak snooker table …TABLE NOW RESERVED BY BUYER.,

TABLE HAS NOW BEEN RESERVED ! so taken off sale .

Due to a mix up in size of table (size provided by the seller who mistook it for a 9ft), the Enbild 8ft x4ft table is back up for sale, but this time it is not located down south but in our workshop dismantled and bubble wrapped ready for delivery with all parts present and correct.

The original buyer requires an oak 9ft table, so we are looking around for one.  Unfortunately they did not want to cut corners and come down to an 8ft as they have space for a 9ft, which I fully understand.  They thought they were buying a 9ft and when we arrived to take the table down we found it was an 8ft table, so the deal fell through.  But we had travelled all the way down to Torquay in Devon to pick this table up for the buyer, so we did a deal with the seller which resulted in us bringing the table back to our workshop for sale.

The mix up was not the fault of the buyer and the seller has been good about it to GCL Billiards as they admitted the fault in the measurements.

This table will make an ideal Christmas present, and the build quality is second to none.  Where would you find another built so solid out of solid hard woods with hand floated slates ?

8ft snooker tables built with 6 legs to this standard are very thin on the ground.  The slate support muntin’s also come up to meet the slate which is a very good feature as you will not get slate sagging.

Interested ? contact Geoff on 07753466064 or email c.large@btinternet.com

Enbild were a Billiards firm based in Liverpool and made good solid tables in Oak and Mahogany.  They were well known for hand floating every set of slates that came in from Italy.

This table is the better solid oak wood finish.  The legs are extremely heavy, and are very chunky with a large turn to them.  There is a matching scoreboard and a wall cue rack also in oak, and a nice wood canopy lighting shade in gold finish.
9ft enbile torquay pocket opening
GCL Billiards are now the owners of this table, and you will be buying direct from GCL Billiards.
The table can be bought as it is collected from NG10 near Nottingham with original cloth, or with a full recover in Strachan 6811 cloth delivered and set up.

The table will come with 6 cues and three rests.  The table has some second hand balls with it for snooker and for pool.  The snooker set is full sized balls.
Room Size for this table, ideal 18ft by 14ft is required with a full size cue.  If you used the smaller 4ft cue then 14ft by 12ft.  Of course you could have a very long room with 18ft width and place this at one end sideways and still have plenty of room for other use.
9ft enbild torquay rack full of cues
Above the nice matching scoreboard .
The colour of the table is light golden oak which would suit many modern homes which have oak embellishments such as skirting windows or doors plus oak beams
The above photos do not show the true colour so we have better close up shot
KODAK Digital Still Camera
KODAK Digital Still Camera
The leg design on this Enbild makes it the top model Grand duke.  Apart from the odd ding this table’s woodwork is almost as new, it has only seen very light use, although the cloth has very deep cue stab marks in so the table ideally should have a new cloth on bed and cushions.

The rubber bounce is fine.  We have the ball hitting seven cushions on throw around and 4 to 5 runs on up and down run when thrown too.
The table has had home use since the 1980s/90s, there is a supplying firm based in Liskeard Cornwall.

We are a little out of pocket due to our trip down to Devon, which is why we have ended up owning the table.  Please get in touch with Geoff at GCL Billiards to discuss what type of sale you would require.  Price will depend on how much work we have to put into the table, delivery and set up costs.  We require your post code and if any stairs are involved in the install process of getting this table relocated and set up.

We are willing to sit on this table for a while so if you require it for say a Christmas present, we can hold on to it complete the cushion recovering and deliver say a few days before Christmas or a Birthday ?

You will not find better build quality for made in the UK table, at the price we are prepared to sell this table at.

Phone around the top UK makers to see what a 6 legged table built to this spec would cost you.  The price for a 8ft to 9ft would be approx. the same.  Then phone Geoff to see what you can have this table for.  Not many 8ft snooker tables with 6 legs come onto the market in solid oak under £4,000 custom built most are 4 legs at £2995 and I doubt you will see  another one with these thick sized turned legs.

*** please note *** This table has a three section slate bed with proper bolt into slate cushion fixings, unlike many 8ft tables that just wood screwed fixings of cushion with bad bounce and thin one piece slate beds.  Although we do not recommend upstairs locations for this table, with it having a three section slate bed it is much easier to locate upstairs than a one piece 8ft slate bed table.

Also note it has 6 legs, some 8ft tables are built with just 4 corner legs, result is a sagging slate bed towards the middle, the span of 8ft is just too much to not have centre legs to support it.

A 4 leg table is not as good buy as a 6 legged table and that is fact known from experience of working on snooker tables for nearly 40 years.  Take a look at the photo below, it looks good ?

In reality this table over time will sag down in the centre as the heavy slate deforms the side wood rails downwards. This table is a low cost Chinese Riley copy …… our Enbild 8ft is a much better buy.
8ft with 4 legs

Do not be tempted by low cost buys such as this table ! unless you know what you are buying .

8ft table 4 legs square

Just for comparison this 8ft with 4 square legs but fancy veneer is £2995 brand new by a top UK manufacturing billiards firm.  We think our Enbild 6 legged 8ft is a better buy than this and our low price including fitting will amaze you !

Still interested ?  Then don’t delay we expect to sell the table by Christmas, be the first to reserve it.

Antique 6×3 foot Snooker table for sale ….very good build quality !

We have a client who wishes to sell on their 6×3 snooker table which looks to have adjustable bottom turners on the legs
I have come across these type of table’s before in similar design and they are very well made vintage of around 1900 /10 maybe a little earlier and are called Parlour Billiard tables
Definitely a Victorian piece of furniture , and you can see the old brass domed screws on the cushions  , these large brass domed screws where also used in the undertakers business to fasten coffin lids down hence why Billiard fitters named them coffin screws , they where widely used in the furniture and billiards table manufacturing and the name coffin screws stuck because that’s what they where mainly used for .
This table cost our clients £1000 when it was supplied to them as can be seen from the last photo of the Receipt in 2001 .
I think that the table is a fixed height table so cannot be made to rise and fall ?  like some Billiard dining tables , but have noticed the cut away on the end for peoples legs to clear the table frame when seated , so it may have been designed to have high chairs and a table top which is not supplied with the table , it is being sold just as a fixed height snooker table , I am not too sure but maybe the rise and fall system is in the adjustable leg heights and it may be a Billiard diner without the top leafs .
possible Victorian billiard table  manufactures are George Edwards / George wright ?
If you are looking for a nice 6ft snooker table then you cannot go far wrong in buying this one …the seller is open to offers , may I remind[people who make an offer that this table is not fold away Argos table , it has a slate bed and is designed to be a permanent fixture rather than one to be moved from room to room .
I would say the current value as it stands is somewhere around the £250 /£300 mark , but our clients are willing to listen any offer that is reasonable .
if any one is interested from the photo’s then contact Geoff at GCL Billiards , he will put you in touch with the seller.

as you can see the table looks the business , but please do not expect a pristine table , there will be signs of use not only on the cloth but the odd belt buckle rash on the cushions and the odd vacuum knock on the legs , it is a well used much loved item , and deserves to go to someone else who will use it .

We have a client who has to sell their full size Riley Club table .
the house is under offer and a quick sale is required ASAP
The table is located in Chidingley East sussex
This table was made circa 1913 to 1960s , being as it has the button hole covers to cushion bolts , it is one of the early tables
Later tables would have have had slide in cushion panels to cover cushion bolt holes , it looks like the buttons are missing from this table .
But they can be made easy and are available to order by the buyer  if the table is sold
Have a look at the following photo’s , and if you are interested please contact Geoff at GCL Billiards on email c.large@btinternet.com with OFFERS for the table , price does not include dismantle and transportation , you can ask GCL Billiards for a price for this , please let me have a post code if you require a quote for dismantle delivery and set up

Riley club fluted leg 1 riley club fluted leg side 2 riley club fluted leg top shot 3
The end plates on the cushions read Riley Burwat , this was a joining of two firms Burroughs and watts and Rileys , Burwat was joined to Riley’s in 1960s when Riley,s bought Burroughs and watts out , in the 1970s/80s Riley dropped the burwat name and went back to just Riley as a main name for the firm .
These name plates would have been put on in the 1960’s when the table was re-rubbered , I do not know if the table has since had another re-rubber , only the owner could give that information .
the table is in Private use and looks to have all accessories with the table , I do not know what type of scoreboard is with the table or if the table has an iron and cover
but contact with the owner could sort out what is with the table and what is not .
This table has to be sold soon rather than later , so you just may get a Bargain ……Offers?

*** I do not know if the table is upstairs at this moment in time I have asked the question but waiting for a reply  , but looking at one of the photo’s I can see a slanting roof rafters , so suggest this may be the case , to keep costs low the buyer may have to supply a little labour to help get the slates downstairs if this is the case , otherwise it is a 4 man job and twice the man power costs to remove this table . so please take this into consideration  when offering a price for the table .

Further info

Table is upstairs on the first floor and 4 men put it up there ,  so extra men will be required , but we do have professional slate slide which requires just three men if the stair is ok to use this on for example  no turns just a straight downwards stair. otherwise it is another 4 man job .

included with the table is two old iron’s and a cloth cover , plus various cue’s cue rack triangle and scoreboard and also the light if required , but we do recommend getting the new type low cost lighting that every one seems to be going over to , these coffin shades are now a bit old fashioned and do not give good lighting and plenty of side shadow of the ball . new high frequency lighting improves to give good sighting of balls with less shadow and they are very low cost to buy .

Very rare to find ,10ft 8 leg snooker table for sale in the North East NE61 area.

We have a client who wishes to sell their rare to find 10ft , 8 legged snooker table
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Most 10fts have just 6 legs , this table has the same legs as a full size snooker table but is 2 foot shorter on length and 1 foot shorter on width .
So if you have a room that is not large enough for a full size table which would be 22ft by 16ft , and have a room approx. 20ft by 15ft , then this is the table for you .
Try finding another 10ft with 8 legs.
What is the benefit of 8 legs over 6 legs ?
More sturdy , better slate support and levelling , and it looks like a full size snooker table .
Take a look at the following photo’s , the cloth looks in reasonable condition as is the woodwork and polish.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA jobson 10ft cloth looks good OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Included in the sale is a light fitting gold coloured three bulb type , 2 long rests, 1 set of Aramith snooker balls,  1 set of American pool balls , a triangle , and the price the seller is looking for is £500 and buyer arranges for dismantle and transport .

For sale Large Brass Snooker / billiard ornate type lighting in form of old gas lamp style but fully electric , very expensive when new from sir Willam Bentley Billiards

These type of lighting where popular in old style Victorian houses with high ceilings
very expensive when bought new , a lower priced one from Christopher wray lighting emporium where just under £1600 , this light was supplied by sir William Bentley billiards and cost over £2000 when new !fancy lighting from sir willam bentley billiards
the photo above is the Light that is for sale ,the other photo’s are just examples of this type of lighting , but they are a much better photo to get the effect of how the light will look above your table .
I am sorry about the quality of the photograph , it was taken by the sellers who used a mobile phone rather than a digital camera .
I can recommend the lighting as I have seen it , it would suit someone with a high Ceiling as stated , but also for someone requiring a more period look to their Billiard / snooker Games room
this light is a Bargain at just £750
It takes 6 bulbs and the shades are made from a pleated cloth in Dark green / Blue ? , this is so much better than those glass shades as they can break when banged with a cue or rest , and the glass will then damage the cloth
with this design that mimics an old Gas lamp , you will not have that problem .
the lighting  shade is available to view and collect from very close to Northampton Town Centre , access from the M1 motorway is around 10 minutes away.
you will require a small transit van to move this .
GCL billiards can quote for delivery , please enquire direct to Geoff on mobile  07753466064

please contact Geoff at GCL Billiards and he will forward your contact details onto our selling client .

I have found a better photo with the light that is for sale , although most of the shade is not viewed , it can be seen in the back ground , this photo shows its effect when hung . Click on photo for larger image !
Copyright MRCPhoto
t
he Lighting Shade belongs to a retirement complex , and the Older gentlemen prefer the lighting of a modern high Frequency lighting  which they have had replace this very ornate shade.
also the room’s ceiling in my opinion and the rooms setting itself did not suit the ornate light.

please note, this sale is direct from the seller’s , no middlemen fees will be added .I have also found a couple of library photo’s of similar lighting that was also supplied by sir William Bentley Billiards old gas type snooker lighting swbentleyold gas lamp sir willaim bentley

As you can see from the photo’s these lighting units where all unique designs , and where bespoke manufactured for Sir William Bentley Billiards , the one in the retirement home is selling is very high end designer material , and would suit someone who is looking for that Victorian feel of Luxury , with a period table there is nothing better than a light that looks like it has also come from that Circa of 1890 /1900

I have just checked price’s with another  supplier ( Hamilton billiards ) of these type of lighting and the price for each pleated coolie shade is £95 per shade plus vat  , so there are £700 worth of coolie shades including vat on this light
and their price for main Brass or stainless lighting is from £1830 to £1890 plus vat . the lamp shades are extra to any light fitting , so these light fittings are around £3000 new at todays prices.
that £750 is  aBaragin from the retirement home .
I think these lighting units are Canadian made and are the from a manufacturer called Swanson .

A little History of Cox & yeman to show the pedigree of this table
Cox and Yeman where founded in 1848 by Henry cox , he was joined by by Edward Yeman in 1851 to form Cox & Yeman .
Edward Yeman had been employed by Burroughs and watts as a Cushion stuffer , a form of stuffing the cushions on a billiard table before early cushion rubber was invented .
He was probably a fully fledged time served Billiards fitter , but there is History reference to him actually stuffing cushions with felt . they both would have had some Cabinet makers training too .
In 1868 they where located at 209a Brompton Road SW .
They where well known for the export of their Billiard tables to India , many of the tables shipped out to India had very hard beetle resistant wood or even frames made out of cast iron to stop wood boring  grubs destroying the table.
In 1870 the first billiards match between Roberts & Cook,
and Cox and Yeman along with Burroughs and watts and Thurston’s they paid for a magnificent trophy which can now be seen in Thurston’s Showroom’s  in Liverpool .
In 1870 they also moved into new larger  premises at 184 Bromton road .
in 1896 the partnership was dissolved , but the business still continued under the old name of Cox & Yeman .
A much further detailed report on cox and yeman can be found by visiting  www.snookerheritage.co.uk/histories-articles/cox-yeman/  info from Peter Clare of Thurston and Peter Ainsworth Billiards historian .
