Re-rubber in northern rubber by Hainsworth , the best you can buy and fit

If youre Snooker table is due for a Re- rubber than do not settle for anything less than northern rubber , make sure it is northern rubber that the fitter is fitting , we often come across tables that have had lower priced canvas backed Taiwan rubber fitted which only realy lasts around 5 years , where northern rubber if kept at room tempreture will last around 20 to 25 years.,
here are a few photo’s of what it takes to get the pockets cutt at the correct angle ,

After marking around the template , the rubber is cutt with a very sharp knife to just outside the pen mark to allow for sanding exact .

once the rubber has been sanded exact , the undercutt of the rubber is done , again with the same sharp knife , notice that I have left a flat nose of rubber all the way around the angle this is the modern way to undercutt , in the 1980s and before this date , the angle was to a point in the curve and did not have the flat edge all the way into the pocket , if youre table has pointed undercutt rubber without the flat nose , then the rubber is about due to be renewed , this photo shows  the rough cutt before it is sanded smooth , you can see the knife marks in the undercutt , I often see work where the fitter has just left the undercutt like this and not smoothed it out , this is not good for a smooth entry of the ball into the pocket like the smoothed out undercutt.

This is the finished undercutt , notice that all sharp angles have been smoothed out , and those knife cutt marks also have gone , this is how a good Re-Rubber should be done , if youre fitter is time served you will have a job done as good as this , the actual undercutt is concaved to allow for the curve of the ball to get under the angle nose of the rubber and deflect into the fall of the pocket .
It has been my observation over the last 20 odd years that some companies and even one man operations are just in the Cue sports trade for as much as they can get out of it quickly , this means cutting corners , speed fitting has never been one of my like’s , and I have always insisted I have enough time especialy on intricate work like re-rubbering , if the job is not done to a high degree then you will not be satisfied with the result , At GCL BILLIARDS we may be £20 to £30 more expensive than other firms on a re- rubber or re-cover , but as they say you get what you pay for we always use top brand materials and top quality time served billiard fitter to do the work . as can be seen from the results a smooth well done finish takes a bit more extra time, 2 days on this job when some would have speed fitted it into one day  , and at the end of the day that extra time is what you are paying for .

an old stock photo of the stamp that is put on every Rubber , always ask to see this if the re-rubber is being done on site , a good fitter will not take this printed stamp off the rubber , it may be under some tape though , a good fitter will allways show the customer this stamp , there is also raised lettering on the under edge of the rubber that also informs you that the rubber is Genuine northern rubber .

all the above photo’s of the Riley table was work carried out 2 days before christmas day (includeing working christmas eve) , the customer contacted us on 22nd December  and was desperate for the work to be done as a Christmas present for her young son who is an up and coming snooker player aged 12 ,from Leicester , he plays on a couple of star tables in Leicester and wanted his Riley to have similar sized pro pocket openings of the star tables , these openings at the fall are now 3.1/2 inch they used to be 3.5/8ths, the cushions are not steel block , but he will get that valuable practice on tight pockets which should improve his skill of accuracy , the cloth was a second hand ex pro tournament number 10 cloth grade ,that the customer supplied themselves via a local professional tour player , the cushion cloth is 6811tournamant and the new rubber is Northern rubber date of manufacture in August 2012.
The only other improvement to this table now is the lighting , he would be much better off with new pro type tube lighting with the white light tubes , two 5 foot units approx 5 foot above the bed is recommended GCL BILLIARDS also supply these., I would not recommend fitting steel blocks to this table ,if the young lad improves to a much higher standard and joins the pro circuit , then he will not settle for anything less than a proper professional Star table with the steel blocks cushions and the heated slates , in the meantime this table is good enough for improveing his skills .

GCL BILLIARDS are time served fitters and can do Re-rubbering to a very high standard , please contact Geoff if you would like this work doing . or wish to enquire for an estimate.

Old 1960s / 70s Pool table , one from the past

It is not all about new tables that we work on , I had a phone call last month for a Pool table re-rubber / re- cover near Derby , and the client sent me a photo of the table , I have worked on this type of table many years ago in the 1970s , but have forgot the maker ? it could be a US billiards make ?
I have just completed the work on the table , but due to my batteries on the camera being flat could not take a photo of the finished table after renovation of rubber and new cloth , the client is going to send a photo though later this week. (and here it is) .

This table would get most pool table fitters in a flap as the top is bolted down useing side bars which are very awkward to work on and get to  . I recalled how to take the table apart and work on the cushions from past experience of this type of table , you have to be realy spot on when bolting the top back to the slate to make sure all the pockets align up with the slate falls . also this table has american angle rubber not the UK L shape like on modern tables .

If you have an old table from the past , do not be afraid to ask if we can renovate it , some parts may not be available anymore but we can prob get around this , but rubber and cloth plus pocket liners will not be a problem , and some people do like the retro look of the 1960s / 70s / and 80s tables , like the French made Rene pierre , or the Italian Rutigliani , or even the later Alca tables which where made in Oldham , Geoff has experience on all these makes of tables.

GCL BILLIARDS HAVE FOR SALE IN LEICESTER, DIRECT FROM THE SELLER, A GEORGE WRIGHT FULL SIZE SNOOKER TABLE CIRCA 1890

We have a client who wishes to sell a nice full sized snooker table made by one of the top Billiard makers of the victorian era.

A George Wright readed leg, with external protruding cushion bolts with wood button covers, thus meaning the full thickness of the cushion body wood is used to tighten the cushion up, making for a far superior bounce from the cushions than a normal recessed cushion bolt.  There are 8 cushion bolt buttons missing, but these could be made .  Also two of the nine inner frame muntins have been misplaced, but again two could be made up.

The table used to be in a garden building that is now being fully demolished and rebuilt, so the owner has had the table moved to a far superior room which is nice and dry.  This has been done so that any buyer can inspect the table first hand and try a few balls around it.
I would recommend a full new cushion wood blocks fitted and re-rubber and re-cover for any new buyer.  As you can see from the photo it is a really nice table with its billiard pockets still intact, very rare to see a table with just bag nets on.  It has never had the ball rails fitted to it in its life and it still sports its original rubber from new (and they still bounce).  This table is over 120 years old !

The 2 inch slates are very true and are of course WELSH manufactured so the best money can buy.

As for polish this is down to the buyer.  Some may like to see it just waxed up and keep its true vintage look whereas others may require a full re-polish.
The seller is looking for offers around £2000.  A billiards firm would be looking for around £5000 to £6000 + vat  fully revamped and fitted.  A London billiards house could ask for as much as £10,000.

Look at the original ivory name plate.  George Wright displayed many of his designs at grand exhibitions around the world including London, Paris and Sydney.  With 16 prize medals awarded on this ivory plaque it informs me it is an early model and around 1890 is the date I would put on it.  With Billiard brass recessed top pocket plates and thick slate .you may also note the royal appointment to HRH Prince of Wales.  This is Prince Edward so Victoria is still on the throne.

For more detailed history information about the firm George Wright read this link (from Peter clare @ E.A.clare and Peter Hainsworth) also note the dating of the 18 medal plaque as 1894 so I am about bang on with dating this table to circa 1890.

Anyone wishing to view the table which is based in Leicester then please email me at c.large@btinternet.com , I will then put you in touch with the seller.  All we ask is please consider GCL BILLIARDS for any renovation or removal and set up work etc.

We do not charge a commission for this service of putting a buyer in touch with a seller so please use us, we are fully qualified time served billiards fitters.

7ft bison

8ft Riley billiard diner for sale includeing Delivery in time for Christmas.

I have put these photo’s up for anyone looking for a 8ft Billiard / Snooker dining table.
The table is being sold as fully renovated by Brian and Peter at cheshire billiards , Brian has been a big help in setting my buisness up .
An 8ft dining table is rare to find for sale these days , most made where the 6ft and 7ft versions , this is a genuine Riley which has been fully stripped and repolished re rubber and re cover , the score board has been manufactured by Brian and Peters firm Cheshire Billiards , this scoreboard is an exact reproduction of a genuine Riley score board , and has a dual purpose , a concealed scoreboard , and a photo display when not in use .
the table is circa 1930s , Cheshire billiards have carefully left the original transfer of Riley still on the end cushion panel .

*Note* the pull out lifting handles on this 8ft , this is to make lifting up to playing height much easier , the smaller 6ft and 7ft versions did not have this feature , and many people used to lift the table up to playing height by the pocket plates , which damaged the table. you should always lift with these handles , of if the smaller table put youre hands under the end cushion , never lift by the pocket plate.
priced at £4995 and in oak , this table would make an ideal Christmas treat for the Family and a fantastic Dining table for the Home .
anyone interested please contact Brian or Peter at cheshire billiards 01724 852359
please inform them you spotted it on GCL BILLIARDS web site.
I am not on commision just returning a favoir for the help Brian has given me.

RILEY DINING SNOOKER / BILLIARDS RAISE AND FALL TABLE IN DERBY, PART RENOVATED BY GCL BILLIARDS

A dual height 6ft x 3ft Billiard dining table made by Rileys in 1933 , GCL BILLIARDS renovated the bed and cushions in 6811 Tournament cloth with new nets and leathers , plus a complete re- rubber in 1/2 x 1/2 inch L shape rubber , regreased the rise and fall lifters , and also refelted the undersides of the 4 table top leafs , and to round it off retipped the cue’s and supplied a set of pool balls, a complete overhaul of the table which had not been touched since 1933 when the table was manufactured by Riley.
The reason for dual lifting was to dine off in the low position and to play in the uplifted position.

The client bought this table in the 1960s for £12.50p where he rescued it from some students who where not treating it with respect , that would be around £650 in todays wages , the table did have a peak to value around 15 to 20 years ago when they where getting £2.500 for a 6ft version , today they have dropped to around £1500 to £2000 renovated depending on leg design and wood used mahogany / oak , some do still fetch nearer the £2500 if they are of the rare model such as serpentine top design .

This one has the turned and fluted leg , the rubber was dated 1933 when we stripped it down and being as no other tack holes in the bed or cushions we know it had never been recovered since 1933. earlier models had buttons or Brass head coffin screws in place of the slide in panel of this later design .
The most sought after size is an 8ft which had two pull out handles at each end to help lift the table upto playing height , these 8fts in pristine condition are priced upto £4995.
