8ft x 4ft solid oak snooker table …TABLE NOW RESERVED BY BUYER.,

TABLE HAS NOW BEEN RESERVED ! so taken off sale .

Due to a mix up in size of table (size provided by the seller who mistook it for a 9ft), the Enbild 8ft x4ft table is back up for sale, but this time it is not located down south but in our workshop dismantled and bubble wrapped ready for delivery with all parts present and correct.

The original buyer requires an oak 9ft table, so we are looking around for one.  Unfortunately they did not want to cut corners and come down to an 8ft as they have space for a 9ft, which I fully understand.  They thought they were buying a 9ft and when we arrived to take the table down we found it was an 8ft table, so the deal fell through.  But we had travelled all the way down to Torquay in Devon to pick this table up for the buyer, so we did a deal with the seller which resulted in us bringing the table back to our workshop for sale.

The mix up was not the fault of the buyer and the seller has been good about it to GCL Billiards as they admitted the fault in the measurements.

This table will make an ideal Christmas present, and the build quality is second to none.  Where would you find another built so solid out of solid hard woods with hand floated slates ?

8ft snooker tables built with 6 legs to this standard are very thin on the ground.  The slate support muntin’s also come up to meet the slate which is a very good feature as you will not get slate sagging.

Interested ? contact Geoff on 07753466064 or email c.large@btinternet.com

Enbild were a Billiards firm based in Liverpool and made good solid tables in Oak and Mahogany.  They were well known for hand floating every set of slates that came in from Italy.

This table is the better solid oak wood finish.  The legs are extremely heavy, and are very chunky with a large turn to them.  There is a matching scoreboard and a wall cue rack also in oak, and a nice wood canopy lighting shade in gold finish.

GCL Billiards are now the owners of this table, and you will be buying direct from GCL Billiards.
The table can be bought as it is collected from NG10 near Nottingham with original cloth, or with a full recover in Strachan 6811 cloth delivered and set up.

The table will come with 6 cues and three rests.  The table has some second hand balls with it for snooker and for pool.  The snooker set is full sized balls.
Room Size for this table, ideal 18ft by 14ft is required with a full size cue.  If you used the smaller 4ft cue then 14ft by 12ft.  Of course you could have a very long room with 18ft width and place this at one end sideways and still have plenty of room for other use.

The colour of the table is light golden oak which would suit many modern homes which have oak embellishments such as skirting windows or doors plus oak beams
The above photos do not show the true colour so we have better close up shot

The leg design on this Enbild makes it the top model Grand duke.  Apart from the odd ding this table’s woodwork is almost as new, it has only seen very light use, although the cloth has very deep cue stab marks in so the table ideally should have a new cloth on bed and cushions.

The rubber bounce is fine.  We have the ball hitting seven cushions on throw around and 4 to 5 runs on up and down run when thrown too.
The table has had home use since the 1980s/90s, there is a supplying firm based in Liskeard Cornwall.

We are a little out of pocket due to our trip down to Devon, which is why we have ended up owning the table.  Please get in touch with Geoff at GCL Billiards to discuss what type of sale you would require.  Price will depend on how much work we have to put into the table, delivery and set up costs.  We require your post code and if any stairs are involved in the install process of getting this table relocated and set up.

We are willing to sit on this table for a while so if you require it for say a Christmas present, we can hold on to it complete the cushion recovering and deliver say a few days before Christmas or a Birthday ?

You will not find better build quality for made in the UK table, at the price we are prepared to sell this table at.

Phone around the top UK makers to see what a 6 legged table built to this spec would cost you.  The price for a 8ft to 9ft would be approx. the same.  Then phone Geoff to see what you can have this table for.  Not many 8ft snooker tables with 6 legs come onto the market in solid oak under £4,000 custom built most are 4 legs at £2995 and I doubt you will see  another one with these thick sized turned legs.

*** please note *** This table has a three section slate bed with proper bolt into slate cushion fixings, unlike many 8ft tables that just wood screwed fixings of cushion with bad bounce and thin one piece slate beds.  Although we do not recommend upstairs locations for this table, with it having a three section slate bed it is much easier to locate upstairs than a one piece 8ft slate bed table.

Also note it has 6 legs, some 8ft tables are built with just 4 corner legs, result is a sagging slate bed towards the middle, the span of 8ft is just too much to not have centre legs to support it.

A 4 leg table is not as good buy as a 6 legged table and that is fact known from experience of working on snooker tables for nearly 40 years.  Take a look at the photo below, it looks good ?

In reality this table over time will sag down in the centre as the heavy slate deforms the side wood rails downwards. This table is a low cost Chinese Riley copy …… our Enbild 8ft is a much better buy.
8ft with 4 legs

Do not be tempted by low cost buys such as this table ! unless you know what you are buying .

8ft table 4 legs square

Just for comparison this 8ft with 4 square legs but fancy veneer is £2995 brand new by a top UK manufacturing billiards firm.  We think our Enbild 6 legged 8ft is a better buy than this and our low price including fitting will amaze you !

Still interested ?  Then don’t delay we expect to sell the table by Christmas, be the first to reserve it.

The snooker in the Green Baize at Skegness Butlins is Free to play  , so the tables do get some heavy traffic over the year and need regular visits from GCL billiards to maintain them
we also get called out for emergency repairs , some of the Butlins Clients do get a bit rough with the cloth and accidents do happen .
Butlins are a valued client of GCL billiards and we always try and be as competitive as possible , but never cut corners , we use the best cloth and materials to maintain them and still take our time to make sure the work is done to a professional standard .
We have a very good relationship with Rob , Albert and Wayne at Skegness , we like to think we are trusted to do good work and we strive to maintain this standard , that is why we get repeat work and will always regard Butlins as a main Client .
We know other firms are always contacting Butlins for the work at Skegness , we like to think we have proved our worth as good contractors and a feeling of mutual trust has emerged over the last couple of years between the Butlins management and GCL Billiards  .
We hope to continue our working relationship with Butlins for many years to come .

Antique 6×3 foot Snooker table for sale ….very good build quality !

We have a client who wishes to sell on their 6×3 snooker table which looks to have adjustable bottom turners on the legs
I have come across these type of table’s before in similar design and they are very well made vintage of around 1900 /10 maybe a little earlier and are called Parlour Billiard tables
Definitely a Victorian piece of furniture , and you can see the old brass domed screws on the cushions  , these large brass domed screws where also used in the undertakers business to fasten coffin lids down hence why Billiard fitters named them coffin screws , they where widely used in the furniture and billiards table manufacturing and the name coffin screws stuck because that’s what they where mainly used for .
This table cost our clients £1000 when it was supplied to them as can be seen from the last photo of the Receipt in 2001 .
I think that the table is a fixed height table so cannot be made to rise and fall ?  like some Billiard dining tables , but have noticed the cut away on the end for peoples legs to clear the table frame when seated , so it may have been designed to have high chairs and a table top which is not supplied with the table , it is being sold just as a fixed height snooker table , I am not too sure but maybe the rise and fall system is in the adjustable leg heights and it may be a Billiard diner without the top leafs .
possible Victorian billiard table  manufactures are George Edwards / George wright ?
If you are looking for a nice 6ft snooker table then you cannot go far wrong in buying this one …the seller is open to offers , may I remind[people who make an offer that this table is not fold away Argos table , it has a slate bed and is designed to be a permanent fixture rather than one to be moved from room to room .
I would say the current value as it stands is somewhere around the £250 /£300 mark , but our clients are willing to listen any offer that is reasonable .
if any one is interested from the photo’s then contact Geoff at GCL Billiards , he will put you in touch with the seller.

Riley Aristocrat in Derbyshire, put right the wrongs of this installation !

I have been over to a country village in Derbyshire to help the owner improve his potting skills on his refurbished Riley Aristocrat Steel Block table.  I found a few faults with the table on inspection and recommended the following:

Open up the 3.25 inch pockets to just under 3.5 inch at the fall.  These pocket openings were far too tight and reminded me of the old billiard tables size of 3.25 inch pockets of Joe Davis’ era of the early 1930’s.

I also found one cushion bolt snapped into the slate and the level was not good enough.

Also they had fitted Hainsworth Smart cloth and the owner was complaining of very slow table cloth speed.  Not surprising it is was a little slow around the spot end as the end cloth was not tacked down for 2 feet.

The cloth looked a bit rough and the owner did iron this on a regular basis.  I recommended Strachan 6811 Tournament 30 oz.

So I got to work opening the pockets up on strip down, slicing off a fair amount of rubber in the pocket openings to my template standard fit.  These old Templates are not the current type as used by World Snooker but they are as near as you can get.  Apparently normal billiard fitters are not allowed to own a set of current templates.  So I used the old ones as a guide and found them to be just under 3.5 inch when covered in cloth at the fall.

1 and 3/4 inch Italian slate
Hulland ward 6811 embroidery Hulland ward riley cloth 6811 transfer
I always like to show my clients that I use the best Strachan 6811 grade Tournament 30 oz cloth , the embroidered writing with blue lines confirms this and also the transfer every 10ft on the underside of the cloth also confirms type of cloth and the weight  standard . Club 6811 has two red lines this higher grade tournament has two blue lines .
This cloth replaced the lower grade Hainsworth smart which was a bit too thick and the nap was not as fine as this 6811 T .
hulland ward centre template hulland ward corner template hulland ward corner measurment 3.5
the templates used and the size of the pocket opening at the slate fall is a shade under 3.5 inch , with the cushions being steel block the rubber starts to open back up after the slate fall , normal older table cushions like the old Riley imperials have a tendency to close up to by a 1/4 of an inch as the rubber bends round into  into the pocket fall . some thing that Snooker players cannot understand and ask for the pockets to be opened up on normal cushions and I have to explain why they cannot do this , unless they opt for replacement modern cushions or steel block .
any way the owner is delighted with all his corner pockets being at Match standard of a shade under 3.5 inch and that the middle pockets where also to template , these where slightly tight too before I started the work.
if the middle pocket openings had been correct and both side cushions pushed apart by a further 1/8th then the corner pockets would have been even tighter  at around 3.1/8th at the drop , I always start from the middle pockets when looking at the correct pocket openings in the corner , get the middles wrong and you also get the corners wrong on steel cushions,  so the first thing to check if corner pockets are tight or too generous on steel cushions is the pocket opening at the centre pockets which should be 3.3/8ths if cut correct .
once the centre pockets are correct then you can adjust the corners to template or just below 3.5 inch for Match sized pocket openings. you do this by cutting excess rubber off and then hand rasp and sanding rubber to form the correct angle using templates as a guide.
If you want club sized 3.5/8th or above sized pockets you just take more off but keep the same profile as the template curve .

hulland ward cushions going on hulland ward waxed bolts
the side cushions being positioned so that the centre pockets are correct with the centre templates fitted into the opening , the Cushion bolt photo is showing that I rub candle wax over each cushion bolt , the main culprit for snapped cushions bolts is grit into the bolt hole and also thread binding , a little candle wax rubbed onto the thread makes for a lubricated thread , you may ask why not use WD 40 or oil , well the oil and WD40 will leach into the slate and you will get stains in the cloth around each bolt stud insert inside the slate .
Never be tempted to use any oil based lubricant on bolts on a snooker table , once inside the slate the oil will be there forever and your table will be ruined especially if you have under slate heating as the heat will force the oil upwards .
and I have seen it done a few times. Use Candle wax it is much better suited for the job.
I have still to get the snapped cushion bolt out of the end slate , this will be done in 6 to 12 months time at Re-stretch , I will order a slate insert and new bolt for this .
This will be a tricky job as the end slate will have to be turned upside down and the old lug drilled out , the hole to be cleaned of all debris and new insert threaded lug put in and car body filled over to keep inside the slate , I put melted wax in the thread and on the bolt when putting the car body filler in to keep threads from getting fouled with the filler .

Hulland ward finished table set up
The finished table.  My client will add a few words about the work at  a later date.  He has yet to play on the table and he is installing three tube heaters under the table around 10 inches below the slate bed on a trip out thermostat set at 25 degrees Celsius.  When this work is done the table will be even faster.  He did comment that it was already faster than the Hainsworth smart cloth that was used when he bought the table from a firm in Leeds.

I was really shocked that they had left him with centre and corner pockets so tight.  I did not have my camera with me for the first part of the work otherwise I would have taken photos of the pocket openings.  As for the snapped cushion bolt, they also chiselled some of the frieze bolt hole away resulting in a missing frieze bolt too.  We will sort all this out on the re-stretch and make the frieze a much better fitting to steel cushions.

Repeat work in Leicestershire for local club with 5 full size snooker tables to re-cover in Strachan 6811 tournament

This is the third time I have visited this club to Re-cover their Full size snooker tables
they seem to suffer cushion cloth split after around 18 months of use and play for 6 months with split cushions ?   , and after some research I found it was down to meticulous cleaning  of the tables , not really  bad thing as it is very hard to fine people so enthusiastic to look after club tables .
Just a little guidance on the cloth splitting  , and how it was happening and a simple adjustment of less pressure to the brush at the cushion angle is all that is required
ivanhoe split cloth cush 1 ivanhoe split 2
I have got to know the person who cleans the tables very well and I have given him a new Pure Bristle Brush to replace the badly worn one so that this prevents the wood of the brush making contact with the cloth on the cushions .
this and the sharp angle of rubber is what was the cause .
I have sanded the angles a little too , a slight rounding off of the sharp edge will also help prevent cloth splitting of cushions .
Ivanhoe finished table ivanhoe new pocket leather and net
The main room , 5 Riley Imperial Snooker tables Circa 1930s ? with New Cushions fitted by Riley Services in the 1990’s
this Venue is very well used and believe it or not snooker is less than £2 per Hour . the table’s get re-covered every 2 years for that and I always replace on one of the tables with new nets and leathers every time I visit .
Thus the nets and leathers are also kept to a reasonable standard of maintenance .

Derbyshire Youth club American pool table re-cover

I have been to a local youth club to re-cover their small 7ft American three section slate pool table in best quality Strachan super pro speed cloth .
Although just a youth club I still used the best cloth as I think this cloth is far better than the Euro American pool cloth and I charged the same price as the lower cloth so the youth club leaders where delighted with that .
Just a couple of Photo’s one before and one after .
le youth club am pool 1 le youth club am pool fin
the original cloth was the easy to rip type of cloth , and would not have been my recommendation to use in a youth club .
The new cloth is more durable and I think a far better colour than the off blue/green turquoise colour used before .
