Open up pockets on a modern snooker table for teaching aid in Nottingham, plus coaching scheme for up and coming younger players

Today I have been over to one of our regular clients whose table I have recovered around three times now.  My client has recently passed his coaching course and is awaiting DBS clearance to work with young snooker players to coach them to a higher level of play.

In readiness to coach these younger players, it was recommended to him that to keep them interested in the game, they should play on a table with wider pocket openings.  As our client has his own personal table, he decided to widen the pocket openings from match play 3.5 inches (as seen on TV) to 3 3/4 inches, a 1/4 of an inch wider.

The pocket opening after the alteration is now 3 3/4 inches at the drop of the slate fall.

We will keep you informed about our client’s new venture, and if any young person, male or female, wishes to have a personal snooker coach, then our client has the facility to coach one-on-one or to small groups of 2 to 4 persons.

The excellent Riley Aristocrat snooker table in light oak is now ready for coaching, having just undergone pocket widening and the fitting of a brand new Strachan 6811 Tournament 30 oz all wool cloth.  The room is fully heated and the table plays very fast and true.  It also benefits from pro-style lighting and Aramith Pro 1G snooker balls.

RAF Officers Mess Dismantle move & errect full size Snooker table from one room to another room in Lincolnshire .

After we had been over to Skegness this week , we managed to tie in with our traveling back from the coast to Nottingham  a visit to a RAF base in Lincolnshire to dismantle and move a full size snooker table .
I have worked on this table many times in the past 40 years .
on one end there is a commemorative plaque from a casualty of the first world war which I thought being as it is 100 years remembrance year to share a photo with you of that plaque .
RAF linc 1914 plaque Off mess
as you can see this is a First world war commemorative plaque in memory of CAPTAIN ESME FARIFAX CHINNERY of the Cold stream Guards and the RFC
Those of you who are historians would know that the R.F.C is what the Air force was called before it became the RAF
Captain Chinnery was in C flight No4 squadron in France in September 1914
a nice touch for his family to donate the Table to the R.F.C  officers mess in remembrance of their loss in an accident over Paris in January 1915
how it became to be in the RAF officers mess in Lincolnshire  I do not know,  but I think that it was handed down over the years from one base to another .
I have moved a few tables around the UK from one RAF base to another .

I have a link to Captain Chinnery history http://wakefieldfhs.org.uk/genealogyjunction/Sussex/Warnham/WarnhamWarMemorial.html
RAF linc table going down
the Burroughs and watts full size Billiards table has stood in this room for years , but now it is being moved to  a much larger  lounge area next door and this room is going to be used for other purpose .
RAF linc table new room level
the Table has now been removed for it’s original billiards room to the new larger lounge the frame put back together and slate’s back on and is now going through the levelling process
this table is circa 1910 and has very thick 2 inch heavy welsh slate sections that pin together to form 12ft by 6 ft full size snooker table .
You may have noticed the edge of a steel block cushion on the floor , so yes this table has steel cushions fitted to it  a much desirable upgrade in the day and still used on match tables on TV
some people crave for these cushions but my advice is if you do not play like Steve Davies then you are wasting your money on such an upgrade.

Butlins Skegness new Strachan Artscape American pool cloth fitted this time with Budwieser logo

We have Just been over to Butlins in Skegness , we arrived Sunday Lunch time to start the 6 American pool tables in hotshots American pool and Bowling centre .
Last year we re-covered them in a grass back ground which was just a photo of turf printed onto the cloth then a Butlins logo across the centres .
this time Rob and Wayne got the Budweiser Rep cornered and got him to sponsor the cloth for the next season for hotshots .
Take a look at the following photo’s , I always enjoy fitting these type of cloths with colourful logos and backgrounds .
Butlins grass dirty drink stains
Last years design of turf with Butlins logo fitted around December 1st 2013  , looking worse for wear with Coke and beer stains , these cloths looked ok two months ago , but as the season starts to get towards Christmas you get a few weekend specials for the younger people  ( 18 to 30s) and drinks are sent flying all over the pool tables , it is good business for Butlins those 18 to 30s spend a lot of cash on those weekend specials over the bar , and it is not too long before they are recovered again .
Butlins bed going on Purple art Bud
the new Budweiser cloth going on , Rob chose a Purple and green alternate colour design from table to table over the 6 tables , 3 in green and 3 in Purple .
Butlins artscape on cushions purple Bud
the top cushion surround of one of the table upside down on another , these cushions have just been recovered in the Purple cloth which has  a water droplet design imprinted into the cloth
Butlins bed on fitted art bud purple
the bed cloth now fully stretched out and fitted , we use a special spray mist coating when we fit the bed cloth , this prevents the cloth becoming slack and also helps prevent drink stains and also puts a nice flower petal scent into the cloth
we are on of the few billiards fitting firms that apply this , and we like to keep this formula a secret , we only use this coating spray on speed cloth and not napped billiard cloth .
the printed artscape cloth is scotch guarded to also help prevent drink stains , but scotch guard will wear off in time as does our scented secret formula . so extra application of spray on scotch guard is a must to help prevent staining like the first photo.
Butlins arstscape instructions
Artscape printed cloth is like matching wallpaper up , the cushion cloths are colour coded and it is important that the colour code on the edge of each cushion cloth is aligned to the same on the bed cloth to get the  pattern running in the same direction and on some cloths the fading to also align up from cushion to bed cloth , each pack comes with instructions of colour coding
Butlins Artscape Budwieser purple and green water
Three done and three to go , the lighting has always been Budweiser .
We completed the work by Wednesday morning , and then moved onto a RAF base near Lincoln for a full size snooker table dismantle and move from one room to another in the officers mess  , but that’s another story .

Original advert  ( TABLE IS NOW SOLD )

We have a client who lives in Leighton buzzard who wishes to sell their much cherished Karnehm and Hillman snooker table
Being the much sought after 10ft version , this table will go into a room where a full size would not allow enough cue room .
this table comes with a full range of accessories including light and iron .
10ft karnehm and hillman tulip leg side
As can be seen from this side view of the table ,the legs are of the Tulip carved type , and the table is styled on older version of billiard table with buttons hiding the cushion bolts rather than a slide in panel ,
which I think is a very good feature .
also between the legs there is a little scroll work and reeding design in the side frame and lower edge to cushion .
10ft Karnehm and hillman tulip full table
the woodwork in these photo’s looks to be in excellent condition , the table having only home use from new ?
In this photo you can see more clearly the carved tulip leg design , this table design is called the Buckingham Model .
10ft karnehm and hillman cloth condition
From this photo the cloth looks a little faded , so we recommend a full re-cover when the table is relocated ,  just ask Geoff for a quote for this ..
the table can be inspected on site and the table is still up to try out .

Pool Table re-cover this week in Newark and Derbyshire

Just a couple of pool tables that I did this week , that I have carried out between some snooker table work and re-cover’s
Supreme 6ft school recover finished
the first pool table was in my home town of Long Eaton at a well known private school , this one is in one of the residence houses and is a  6ft supreme Winner 1st edition recover in Green 777 Strachan cloth .
newark blue pool side level
And this old 7×4 table which I think is an old Lyme Grove table made in wales , the owner had taken all the trim off this table and sprayed it satin white , and with that Blue 777 Strachan cloth it is looking superb
My client had built a large garden sectional building at the bottom of his Garden in Newark , with giant screen projection TV and video games , and the place was very warm with just one oil filled radiator left on and a back up fan booster heater if required .
newark shed blue pool level
As always on my re-cover , I check and adjust for level , note my converted Mercedes jack that I use to lift the table up to allow adjustment of screw down feet .
I also fitted a new set of rubber corner pockets to this table .
and because it was a white table I also marked the baulk line out in white and used a white spot for the racking up of the balls .
who would believe this table is 30 years old ?

Open up corner pockets on full size snooker table in Blackburn

Today I have been up to Blackburn to do a variety of improvements on a full size snooker table in a private house.  The main work was to open up the pocket openings which where close to 3.3/8ths at the fall, and to make them 3.5/8th at the fall to template angle.  Here are a few photo’s of how I went about completing this work and other improvements on this table.
Blackburn cloth turned back on each corner
The first thing I did was to remove the cushions and strip back the cloth at each corner pocket, then refit to see the actual size of the openings without cloth over top of the rubber .
Blackburn template too big for pocket opening
As you can see from above photo, the template is not fitting into the pocket openings as they are too tight.  Professionals play on 3.5 inch openings, most clubs play on 3.5/8th to 3.3/4 openings.  These were too small at 3.3/8th opening.
Blackburn pen line on pocket rubber before cut
Pen marking the rubber using the template as a guide, we are ready to start cutting a new angle more suited for a home play table, as the owner was having problems getting a ball to fall on 3.3/8th pocket openings.
Blackburn cutting rubber opening pockets up
Cutting the rubber with a very sharp knife to just inside of the pen line, we then finish off the cut by sanding back so that the pen line just disappears .
Blackburn template in corner fitted snug
Where once the template did not fit, we have opened the pockets up so that the template fits nice and snug.  The pockets are now 3.5/8th at the fall of the slate.
Blackburn Riley bracket with bolt new
This table has adjustable slate supports in the centre of the table, we call these slate supports muntins.
I do not know why ?  but the firm that installed the table had left two brackets off, so our client’s father made two new ones, and the other four brackets had the adjustable bolt missing so the centre muntins did not support the centre of the slate.  It is important that the slates are supported along the middle of the table, if not you get what is known as slate sagging.  This will mean a ball played down each side rolling inwards from each side, and this can only be rectified by lifting and supporting the slate in the centre of the table .  So with two new replacement brackets and 6 new bolts we have rectified this problem.
Blackburn all brackets now working with bolts
A view along the underside of the frame showing three of the adjustable brackets supporting the muntins (centre slate support beams). A simple yet effective way of supporting the slate allowing for adjustment.
Note the leg looks like it is off the floor, this because the firm that fitted the table used round shims under square legs.
Blackburn packed slate with window shims
You may remember I did a write up about this table a few weeks back, showing packing that had been inserted and also a problem with slate falls not being the correct shape (see above photo).  Those packers are double glazing shims for aligning UPVC windows to the outer brick opening!  It was obvious that the client would spot this and ask for a second opinion, and then the other problems became apparent.

The client informed me that the seller of the table had replaced the slate for much better ones with good slate fall shape, and had made good the packing by removing it and getting the table much more level.

I was bought in to finish off the job to a higher standard, and this I achieved, by making it possible for the client to make shots into the corners that he is more confident in potting and not to get frustrated at too tight a pocket to aim for.  Also to make sure the table was level and would stay level by making sure the adjustable muntin brackets worked and the two missing ones replaced.  Finally to remove the round packing shims under the legs that made it look like the leg was off the floor and put square custom, made on site, shims to fit perfect.  This took me 15 minutes with a mitre saw and a piece of scrap plywood. All my client has to do now is to stain the edge of these square shims to match the frame colour mahogany, and finally play on the table  making some good high breaks.
Blackburn finished with templates in
As you can now see the templates including the middles now fit perfect
Blackburn jeremy finished table
The finished table set up ready to play.  I am sure our client and his Father-in-Law who kept me supplied with tea all day will have many a happy hour spent on this table now it is playing correct.

I also took the nets up one loop as the client was complaining of balls getting stuck in  sagging nets.  By taking up one loop the net sag disappeared.  I also wrapped each end of the net around the wire loop screw rather than tacking it!

The pocket plates were also loose and screws had been stuck into the lug holes to try and lift them up and stop them rattling.  A simple thin strip cloth packing inserted into the twin lug holes was all it required to make the two pin pocket plates fit tight and not sag down.

Next month I am opening up another full size snooker table’s pocket openings to 3.3/4 inch.  This is because that client is now a qualified development coach.  He has sought advice from other coaches and they recommend larger pockets for young people who are new to the game. By having 3.3/4 inch pockets they will gain confidence and mature into good players who will then go on to play on tables with tighter pockets with that confidence.  Otherwise they may just give up because they have not gained that confidence and experience of potting balls and making breaks.

This makes sense to me, but some good players frown upon it.  What they do not realise is confidence is the main thing to build on, the skill factor comes next.

I often tell them a story about a young teenager I knew back in the 1980’s playing in a club in Sutton in Ashfield in Nottinghamshire.  He was playing on pockets that were close to 4 inches!  I made a remark to him, “you will not make it as a pro playing on pockets that large”.  That young man was Gary Wilkinson.  He was once ranked 5th in the world!
