Supreme winner recover in 6811 Strachan cloth

I was contacted by Brian who has a new winner supreme at his home , housed in a rather spacious conservatory .
He was looking for a high quality cloth for his pool table , and I had recommended the Strachan 6811 all wool cloth with fine nap to him .
Brian has all the kit for looking after his Pool table including a very expensive Full size Billiard table iron .
a must if you want to keep that nice fine nap flat for a speedy cloth yet retain it’s napped wool cloth to make that cue ball perform on side and swerve plus screw back shots .
try these sort of shots on nylon speed cloth and the cue ball will not perform , it may be a speedy table using man made fibre speed cloths but these all wool Strachan cloths have been proved to be the best for the type of cue sports played here in the UK.
Have a look at the following photo’s , Brian had some new cushions fitted although I did point out at just over two years old his old cushions where perfectly fine .
P1020956
the Winner supreme with it’s new cushions placed in order and numbered , we always cover 5&6 cushions to the right as the nap on all side cushions should follow in the same direction as the bed , some speed fitters cover them in all one direction , this is wrong , so always feel the side cushions on your table and make sure the nap is going in the same direction as the slate bed nap , the end cushions nap should go to the left .
P1020957

always make sure you clean the ball runs when the slate is being re-covered , as grease and muck from these rails transfer to the balls and back onto the nice new cloth you have just fitted , a fitter doing speed work always seems to leave this job plus all the muck inside the table floor , I have seen tables with many crisp packets nub ends , half eaten sandwich , plus other unmentionable food , used condoms if your unlucky , false teeth ? , old sticky sweets ..the list goes on , you name it I have probably found it in a pool table including a gold sovereign that had fell out of someone’s ring .
P1020958
Again we find the spray on glue that was applied at the factory , these where a problem a few years ago , the recent ones coming out of the factory are much better , this one was a bad one , see photo below to see how it came out when cleaned off with nail varnish remover ( Acetone )
P1020961
The slate has been soaked in Acetone and the old glue rubbed off to reveal a nice clean slate , a must if you want the ball to roll true up to the pocket fall , if I had left that old glue on like speed fitters do and again used spray on glue the table would have been unplayable , but they would have been down the road having extracted the cash for doing the work and no chance of them calling back to rectify it , and sadly there are a few firms out there that behave like this .
P1020963

The cloth that was used , Strachan 6811 100% pure new wool cloth with very fine nap .
P1020965
The finished table , looks inviting ! lets play pool .
P1020967

Not finished yet though , we have to level the table , we never leave a job half done . by not booking too many table’s in for recovering  in one day we have that extra time to make sure your table is fully playable and that includes levelling within a thickness of a £20 note .
P1020969
Double check of level using a good old fashioned Engineers level , and the more modern Digital level. 0-0 is bang on
digital level 0.1 £20
What it looks like when the level is out by the thickness of a £20 note ….. =  0-1

Snooker table Karnehm & Hillman 8ft x 4ft for sale . a much sought after size with sectional slate bed ….PHOTO’S now added

We have a client who has sent us some photo’s of a very nice condition Karnehm and Hillman 8ft x 4ft with full size balls
These tables are very well made and being a square leg will suit modern look furniture .
these tables are very much sought after due to the size not being full size yet still offering that full size feel in cushion rebound and build quality you would expect ,
And the reason is they are made exactly like a full sized table , sectional thick slate , bolted into slate cushions , full size rubber profile , full size pockets ,
also a 8ft may be better to play with 10 reds in place of 15 but they can still take 15 reds if required. the table also has 6 legs so the center legs which will stop any slate sagging of the length a common occurrence on 4 legged 8ft tables .
I will be adding photo’s of the table at a later date when the owner sends them to me unlocked to download , I can see the photo’s but cannot download them to this site at the moment , therefore here is one similar being a 10ft one , ( PHOTO’S NOW DOWNLOADED SEE BELOW  last 4 photo’s. )
Essex Cabin K&hillman finish 10ft,
the table in this photo is a 10ft version of a Karnehm & Hillman
the one that my client has is smaller then this table at 8ft but the exact same design and only 4 buttons on each cushion .
not as pristine as this fully refurbished one but still in very good condition cloth and woodwork wise , just the usual zip marks and knocks  on the cushions .

Below is the actual table for sale , I have managed to unlock them from the Microsoft security that was stopping them .

as you can see this table is also in very good condition , and it takes a full size ball so my client says , the table used to belong to my clients father who passed away recently and was still playing in his 90s
my clients father was also a fully qualified referee who officiated in the first televised match at the National liberal club , my client has photo’s of him playing Joe Davies .

it may help to get a price for moving it first before you make an offer .

BADLY FITTED SNOOKER TABLE ? and why adjustable muntin brackets are the way forward .

Now and again I get emails from people who have had a table fitted saying they are having a few problems and how can it be sorted out  , now I am not going to embarrass the person who sent me this photo
And I will not name and shame the firm who sold him the table who have badly fitted it . but thought it may be a warning that low cost table fitting can not always be the best option. but in this case I understand it was not low cost.
but even if it was , there is only one way to put a table together and that’s the right way .
they say a picture tells a story , well this one certainly does.
BAD packing under slate
First glance it is obvious that something is wrong here ,
the obvious one those blue double glazing plastic window frame shims should not be there in the centre of the slate , looks like this fitter also doubles up as a window fitter between snooker work .
The numbering indented into the supporting slate muntin , this is upside down so informs me the muntin may also be fitted upside down and therefore this may be the  reason of the very large gap that has to be packed to support the slate from dipping in the centre of the table.
Look further across at the side frame , I see more blue plastic shim and also thick wood or cardboard , this side rail of the main frame is supposed to be planed straight , most are good straight off the machine , some have to be shot with a long iron plane to get straight before the slate is put on .
Now and again you may see a playing card here and there which is acceptable on some tables , but to this extent of this thickness . it looks like they went so far levelling with shims under the legs then tried to get it level by packing between slate and frame .
Some may ask how to rectify this problem , well there is only one way start from scratch . table dismantled slates off and make sure all muntins are fitted correct , fit adjustable bracket to muntins to make  abetter table if possible .
Shoot side rails straight .
Level from highest leg , then put slates back on , Fine level and fill joints , sand clean and refit bed cloth , result is an expensive job to put right .
The moral of this story is use a qualified time served Billiards fitter
Essex cabing muntin conversion
this is what it should look like , note the adjustable bracket , very little cost to put these in on a rebuild .
and no packing in sight on the far side rails , centre muntins adjust up to support the slate.
leeds adjust brackets under
another conversion using adjustable brackets , this time recycled from an American pool table and used on this 8ft snooker table .
but a simple joist beam bracket from B&Q will do the job and use a bolt and two nuts , drill a hole and weld one of the nuts to the bracket
muntins fitted adjustable

B&Q Diy bracket
And it is far easy to fit these brackets than messing round packing slate with window packing and chasing bubbles on the level

Burroughs and Watts steel block full size for sale just £500 ! NOW SOLD WE THINK ! plus a word of warning about DIY removals of a snooker table.

SOLD ! after just one day .

Another table spotted on GCL Billiards web site sold from the advertisement , this table I am informed is being collected on Tuesday of Next week , GCL billiards did not get the work of moving the table , in fact we where never asked to quote for it , so I suspect the new owner is picking the table up themselves having had some experience of dismantling tables ? or has a fitter already in mind before he got in touch with us.

that’s ok if you have the confidence and a little experience doing it , but for normal buyers who think picking a full size table up and loading is a breeze , your in for a shock .

I dismissed buying over 20 vans for not being capable of my line of work , before I decided to buy the correct one for the job.
My MWB / MRH / Vauxhall Movano can carry more weight than it’s long wheel base Brother and thats fact.

a word of warning for DIY removals . for the Buyer and the seller.

apart from serious injury from the heavy slates you also risk damaging the sellers property of which you will be liable for repair .
GCL billiards have the right moving equipment including the proper vehicle with a cargo weight of over 1650 kg  . most vans including the large mercedes sprinter will be overweight with a steel block table on , some transits are also not within legal carrying capacity , get stopped by the law for being overweight and you have to unload there and then the excess weight , a large fine and points on your license .

ORIGINAL ADVERT

We have a client based in Sunderland who inherited a full size table with the house they moved into 20 years ago
Although they have lived with the table for so long they now wish to renovate the room it is in for other purpose
This table is circa 1900 / 1910 and has the most craved for cushions in the Billiard table industry , the steel block cushions .
Now if this table was just a standard table I would be advising my client to just give it away , but the fact it has those steel cushions on and good welsh slate means it has some value .
and you will be amazed at how many people want to upgrade from standard cushions to steel cushions .
So you have  a choice , buy the table as a project to renovate , or buy it for the steels to go on your own table and recycle the rest .
This table is based in Sunderland so please work out any mileage costs to collect the table .
GCL billiards will be happy to quote for collection of this table , just provide Geoff with your post code and he will work out a price for you .
Please have a look at the following photo’s , you can see it would require a new cloth , new rubber , new nets and leathers and maybe rails .
plus any woodwork repairs .
But at £500 it is well worth the price just for the cushions .
any buyer would have the reasonability of arranging  removal of  the whole table from site which is on a ground floor location .

the old badge is faded , but you can still make out the name Burroughs & Watts Ltd and the lower writing would have said Soho Square and below that  Patented steel vacuum cushions .
So there you have a nice period 1900 /1910 table made by one of the best billiard table makers in the UK Burroughs & Watts with those desirable steel cushions .
a snip at just £500 .
any one interested , please contact Geoff at GCL billiards by email c.large @btinternet.com , he will pass on your details to the seller .

please note , Geoff is ill at the moment but will be fit to answer emails by the weekend once his antibiotics have kicked in .

Scotland trip just over the borders to Greenlaw near Coldstream Full size snooker table move to Marchmont House

We have just been over the border into Scotland to a large country house that is having a full makeover.  Marchmont House is a very large Palladian house built for Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of Marchmont in 1750.

The house was sold in the early part of the twentieth century to Captain Sir John Helias Finnie McEwen.  He inherited a considerable fortune from his uncles who had built the harbour at Rio de Janeiro.  Much later the house was sold to Sue Ryder Care and was a nursing home during the 1980s.

It is now in the hands of a multi-website search provider (sorry I do not like to disclose my clients full details as privacy is part of my client’s privilege).

The house is having extensive restoration to put it back as one of the best maintained and refurbished country houses of Scotland.  The house has an approach avenue looking east that is believed to be the longest approach avenue in Scotland for any country house.
The avenue marchmont house winter
A scene of the avenue in winter.

I was contacted by my client’s agents who enquired about moving a full size snooker table that was located at a nearby farm, transporting it over to Marchmont House and replacing what was necessary to put the table into good playing order.  Here are few photos of that actual move:
P1020907
The farm building that the table was housed in before the move.
P1020911
Driving up to to Marchmont House.  As you can see, plenty of builder’s vans on site.
P1020912
The frame of the table installed into the room.  We just unloaded all of the woodwork through the large sash ground floor window from our van parked just outside.
P1020915 P1020916
A rotating cue rack and Life Pool scoreboard also came with the table.
P1020918
You can just make out the manufacturer’s name in the top of the leg …THURSTON & Co.
P1020920
The slates were then wheeled on a piano trolley around the long corridor to the room and placed on the frame.  We got as far as levelling the table, plastering the joints and stripping a couple of cushions ready for the next day’s work.

I think we did very well setting off from Nottingham at around 7am, getting up to Greenlaw at around 12.30pm, booking in at the B&B, then off to the farm to dismantle and load, then up to the main house to unload and get to this stage.

P1020921
It was a little dusty as you can see from the camera flash after sanding the slate joint filler down flush, but here you can see we placed the old cloth onto the table to protect the cushions as we were recovering them.
P1020925 P1020926 P1020927
The new cloth just about to go on.  Note the brand used, we always recommend Strachan 6811 Tournament 30 oz cloth.
P1020928 P1020929
The finished table.  We also waxed all the woodwork and buffed it up.  The outbuilding that was used for the table in the farm before we moved the table had chickens in.  Some had got in from the barn next door and covered the table with feathers and chicken poop.  We finished off with new nets leathers and rails.

We set back off to Nottingham at approx. 1.45pm and arrived home at 5.30pm.  The table did not require a re-rubber as the cushions had been re-blocked and new rubber fitted during some work in the recent past.  The ball responding around 7 rebounds around the table and 4.5 runs on the length which is very good for standard cushions.

All that is required now is for the electricians to put the new lighting up.  We have recommended that they look at our for sale section where a private seller is advertising a set of old gas lamp look-a-like electrical Victorian period reproduction lights.  They repainted the old coffin shade seen to the right of the photo above, so they have a choice.  But what do you think would look right in this period house?  A light like this in the photo below or the coffin shade?

I would like to thank our client’s agent, Hugh, for using GCL Billiards to carry out the work to move the table.  We are extremely grateful and privileged to carry out the work at such a nice and interesting home.

GCL Billiards undertake all types of table removals and relocations around the UK, some in houses as grand as this and others in garden sheds.  It makes no difference to us, we treat every client on the same level.
P1020933
Next month we have a table to relocate from West Sussex to a garden summer house.  The work will be the same dismantle, load, unload and assemble.  You can be sure we will pay as much attention to detail as we have installing this table at Marcmont House to your pride and joy.

We are very busy at the moment but we can still find time to fit you in if you book us well in advance.  If you know you have a table that requires work in the near future please do not leave it until the last minute to book us in, act now to avoid a long wait.  We are very popular and we do not charge VAT.

If sending photo’s of tables to us to put on our web site !

GCL Billiards visit Large local club in Derby, and they have three pool tables recovered in Hainsworth Match and Hainsworth Precision

I got a phone call the other week to book GCL billiards to call in and re-cover three of the 7 pool tables in this well known large Snooker club in Derby.
The Players and management where very specific in the type of cloth that they wanted the tables re-covered in
and Hainsworth branded cloth was the first choice , two of the tables to have Match cloth and the one table in the main lounge area to have precision cloth
these cloths are not a low cost option , but they where adamant that they wanted this cloth so it was arranged to get this cloth which is not one of my main cloths that we use.
I normally use Strachan branded cloths  on all cue sports tables.
But I must admit the cloths where very good to put on , they where a bit thinner than the normal cloth that I use , so I am very interested in seeing it’s wear qualities .
the Hainsworth match had a fine nap but felt a little coarse , the Hainsworth precision also had a fine nap but felt soft to the touch .
I am awaiting feedback from the Management and Pool teams experience of the cloth .
GCL billiards are happy to fit  any cloth that the customer ask’s for , and as always we always prepare the table before fitting , taking all staples out of the cushions , cleaning slate of any overspray of glue and applying by hand spreader new contact adhesive glue ( WE DO NOT USE SPRAY ON GLUE ) . Please read this link for the reasons we do not use spray on glue

https://gclbilliards.com/pool-table-re-covering-spray-on-glue-v-spread-on-contact-adhesive-glue-for-attaching-bed-cloth-on-you-decide/

We also vac out the table and wash and wipe down the ball run’s , you would be amazed at how many companies just leave all the dust and muck inside the table , and if  you think about it , the balls run on this grease and dust on the rail system and deposit it on the Brand new cloth just fitted , a no brainer really to clean out the table as well as re-cover it .
We also found a low spot on one slate bed , this had been filled by someone very badly , I sanded all the loose filler away and surface spread new filler , and then with a sanding block sanded the filler level with surrounding slate bed , it is now as good as new .
This large club was taken over two years ago , and the new ownership have made great stride’s in making it the No1 Club in Derby for cue sports.
GCL billiards take pride in that when they do a job they do it well , and with the top branded cloth that the club selected and the top class thorough workmanship , this club is only supplying the best for it’s members .cueball derby pool room cueball pool room busy
As can be seen from above photo’s , this Derby based club has very good facilities for pool and snooker , plus they have multi Darts board area and lounge.
they also have  numerous pool teams use the excellent facilities .
the tables are well spaced out , and they have plenty of cue room .
the tables used are all free play Winner supreme which are light timed charged for club members and visitors , these Supreme pool tables are as used by professionals in  competition and tournaments .

I would like to thank the Management of CueBall Derby for using GCL billiards , we are a local firm and we think local Snooker club’s should give us a try , we aim to do excellent thorough none rushed work ,which in the cue sports industry it is hard to find a firm that sticks to these values , there are so many firms who rush work to get as much cash flow profit through the firm rather than a steady guaranteed flow due to good workmanship.
I based my firms value’s on my Old Boss John hopkin’s values  , he was well known in the billiards industry for being very fair and thorough and took pride in the family firm .
He always instructed the staff who worked for him to do the best unrushed job that we could do .
It helped that john was a church going man , and did a lot for the local church of which he is still a member at the ripe old age of 92?
I am not a church going person myself , but I like to think some of John’s Christian value’s rubbed off over the years I worked for him .
