Transporting a Snooker /Pool dining table 144 mile round trip.

Today we have been asked to pick up a Snooker / Pool dining table and bench seats in solid oak from Leicester area to the other side of the M6 near Stafford
A total of 144 mile round trip from our base.
leicester to stafford diner 1
We arrived and quickly dismantled the table and loaded it onto our van , fully taking care in wrapping every polished part so no damage could occur to the table , the rise and fall lifters where also numbered
it is important to keep each rise and fall lifter in order so that they go back on the table in the same place , as they are made from brass and wear into the other part of the lifter .
You will then have a more smooth action rise and fall system rather than one that sticks .

the cushions we noticed where a little loose on this table , and we have found that the manufacturer /installer has missed some screws out , a rather large amount of screws , also the way the under screwing of the cushions was done is a little to be desired , so we have suggested on the next re-cover that we re-drill new location holes for the cushions , thus we will then make a much better job of the cushion fixing and a better bounce from the cushion’s.
a firm cushion is a must on any cue sports table . but in order to do this work we have to re-drill through the edge of the slate and the old bed cloth will have to come off for this .
If the manufacturer /supplier of this table reads this,Hang your head in shame , this table was not fitted correctly on it’s first installation.

Pool table recover , getting rid of the spray on glue ! and Level.

A pool table recover local to me , the slate again was covered with the spray on glue residue , this makes a ball down the side of the table roll into the table or snake , also around the pocket openings a slow ball could just put the brakes on as it rolls up to the lip of the old glue under the cloth.
Daybrook clean slate pool table

daybrook 2 clean slate

We erased as much glue as we could using acetone thinners, then sanded down the remaining to remove the glue from the playing area of the slate
At GCL billiards we use combed on contact adhesive , this is the best way to glue the cloth to the slate , is has high grab values and if put on the edge cannot interfere with the play field of the pool table. Spray on glue is not the way to put the bed cloth onto slate . it is a quick way of doing it and many speed fitters use this method of glueing as many slates as they can in one day .
after the re-cover we turn our attention to the level of the table , where many table fitters are out the door by now we take our time and get the table to it’s best level possible even if it means phoning up our next appointment later in the day to say we are running late .
on this table it was showing high on the glue before the re-cover , after the removal of the glue and new cloth we got the table level to 0.0 on the digital level .

The finished table ready and ready for League play that evening
daybrook finished level tablewe got the work through recommendation from another client , this is our testimony to a job well done , Recommendation is the best form of praise that we could hope for , it brings new clients to our door , and through this client we also hope for more re-covering of cue sports tables in and around the league .
we like to feel that we are the best in what we do and the No 1 choice, when I am looking for say an Ariel fitter or double glazing specialist , it is always a minefield of who to go to or who to trust , I think it is the same with re-covering of cue sports tables , and recommendation is the best form of advertising for us .

Snooker table re-cover in Northampton, sort out a bad re-cover for our New Client

Today I have been over to Northampton to sort out a re-cover that had been done only 8 weeks ago.  The client phoned me with a list of things he did not like about the work that had been carried out by a firm from down south.  I cannot name them for legal reasons but for now we will call them Bodge it and Scarper.

On arrival I started to dismantle the table down for a re-cover.  What I found will alarm some, but I do come across this type of shoddy work all the time.  Remember a low quote normally results in shoddy work or lower priced cloth used.  You are not saving any money in the long run using firms that do this type of work.

The first fault I found was the slips were hammered in low on the cushions.  This made the cushions look untidy and you could feel proud staples under the cushion cloth from above the cushion where you rest your hand on sometimes to take a shot.

Photo 1: Just look at this stapled in slip with proud staples showing after I took the cushion cloth off.  You could really feel these through the cloth!
cooper stapled in slips
photo 2 ,  fault 2 , I found where the very large V on the middle slate fall , this is where a person cannot fit the cloth properly and glues a piece of cloth in the fall before he attempts to recover as he knows he is going to end up with these very large upturned V shape in the pocket fall .
photo below of V in fall , a badly fitted cloth .
cooper v in cloth
Fault 3 , the Bed cloth had been put on with a staple gun by Mr  Bodge it , on no account should anyone put a Billiard table Bed cloth on with staples , it is amateurish and for a so called professional firm to do it , that is shocking workmanship as is all the faults that I am listing in this thread . and Fault 4 was the type of cloth they fitted to a Match table , Club grade is for normal snooker table use , 6811 Strachan  is available in three or four different grades and in different weights in that grade , the cloth they should have fitted is Strachan 6811 tournament with two blue embroidered lines in , you can clearly see this 6811 club has red lines in .  when quoting for a match table they should have been given the choice of match cloths not club cloths , and pointed out to them what the difference is in such cloths .
So bad choice of cloth and not fitted correctly .

cooper stapled on bed clothcooper 6811 gold club 6811 gradeThe next fault I found was the none cleaning of the slate before fitting the bed cloth , under the spots on a snooker table you get a large mound of compounded slate dust , this should have been removed by lightly sanding the slate down , the client expressed that they where having difficulty getting balls to stay on the spots straight after the cowboys had re-covered it , When I removed the cloth , I found out they had not cleaned the slate down before fitting of new cloth . look at the photo you can see the two lumps of chalk dust where the old spots used to sit , this is common on tables where players pound the ball into the spot , it vibrates dust to the impact point and builds up small mountain of dust under the cloth which gets compacted just like these two lumps . but it takes months for this to happen not 8 weeks since they re-covered the table .
cooper compressed chalk dust under spot not cleaned the next fault was the level of the table , it was expressed by the owners that the table be levelled when they re-covered this match table , they left it dipping towards the black spot end , by a very large amount , that a slow ball across the table just kept rolling off .
I also found that on one cushion the rubber had been nailed on for about a foot ,this should have been re-glued back on , but I cannot be sure the people who did this  re-cover did this, so will let them off that fault , but I did take a photo for my records .
cooper nailed on rubber
Right that’s enough of the fault finding for now , the following photo’s show what I did to rectify the poor workmanship .
cooper propper fitted cloth centre slate fallFirst of all the Bed cloth was fitted using 5/8ths tacks as used in the Billiard table industry for fitting bed cloth for years and still used today , the slate fall on the centre pocket is fitted correctly no large V can be seen , the cloth used for this Match table is Strachan 6811 tournament cloth , there is only around £20 difference from using this cloth to Strachan club cloth , so is it really worth fitting the lower quality club cloth to the match table ?
I took the old cloth off as careful as I could this is now going back to the firm that undertook the first re-cover .
I put a strip of cloth in the large rebate that the cloth slips go into , to raise the slip slightly , this got rid of the sunken slip shape in the cushion . you may also note the Electronic digital  level is at 0.0 , which is bang on level , although in places it is 0.1 which is the thickness of a £20 note out of level , which is nothing to worry about as the ball still rolls true . and is miles better than the 0.7 it was out by before I levelled it .
cooper three and five eighths at fallPocket openings are 3.5/8ths at the fall on all corner pockets , the fitter who did the The last re-cover had one pocket wider than the other , it is very simple to make sure that both end pockets are the same , nip each end bolt up and measure,  if they are not the same ,slightly slacken the  end bolts  and tap cushion across slightly towards the larger pocket opening , there is a 1/8th clearance around each bolt so this gives adjustment to make sure the pocket opening at the fall is identical , when they are simply tighten all the bolts up .
cooper finished level table note lightsThe finished table , why the other firm did not carry out the work to a satisfactory level is beyond me they also did three pool tables at the same time as this snooker table and made a mess of recovering the cushions correctly on at least two of these  , I base my business on repeat work , by showing my new client how I went about the work show’s him I really care about my work ethics .
and the result was a promise of more work on their many snooker tables and pool tables , not only in this club but at their much larger sister Club .
I hope by showing the faults and what to avoid will point more customers my way , I may be £20 to £40 more expensive , but I do use more expensive materials and invest in the proper tools to do the work , so in reality am I any dearer ? and you can be sure I take my time and also improve the table if possible .

Re-cover / Re-rubber plus fit new rosettes to Cox and Yeman Snooker table in Nottinghamshire

Monday and Tuesdays work, strip and re-rubber with best Northern Rubber made just down the road at Retford, a Cox and Yeman full size snooker table in North Nottinghamshire close to the Lincolnshire border.

We then re-covered the bed and cushions in best Strachan 6811 Tournament grade cloth.  We also sorted out a contact in Ireland for our client who had some original Cox and Yeman rosettes which are used for cushion bolt covers.  These are made from bronze but there was not a full set.

We sourced a foundry in Retford who cast some new rosettes, then sourced a new tap and drill set to re-tap a new thread into the original Cox and Yeman cushion bolts and supplied new brass securing screws for the rosettes.

You may also note we replaced the coffin shade with new high frequency soft white lighting, which really lights the table up.

We like to feel we went a little further than most billiard firms would do, to source original Cox and Yeman rosettes with the help of a billiard firm in Ireland (thank you Gerard) and then to find contacts and suppliers for the owner to make some new ones from a mould of the originals.  It was a task that we where happy to complete.

Look at the following photos of the table with the new rosettes fitted.

We completed this work over two days taking our time to make sure all the work was completed to a high standard.  The pockets where also opened up to 3 5/8ths at the fall when we cut the new rubber pocket openings.

Below: some very strange pocket plates on this Cox and Yeman.  Large horse shoe designed corner pocket plates with screw lugs and the centre pocket plate has large tapered square lugs.
cox and yeman pocket plates screw hole cox and yeman centre pocket square lug
Below when viewed directly from above the opening, the size of pocket is 3 5/8ths at the fall.  The table before the re-rubber had different sized pockets from 3 3/8ths to 3 1/2 inch.  The owner was having difficulty in getting good breaks on the table.  We fitted the lighting a few weeks back and this improved his game, but with the new pocket openings I am sure he will be getting above the 50 which is his highest break so far.

cox yeman three and five eighths opening
Below a ball in the opening of the fall to show how it measures up.  We try to aim for 3 5/8th pocket openings but after the fall on these standard cushions the opening narrows to 3 1/4 inch.  We do get a few people trying to compare a standard wood cushion with a steel block opening.  We have to point out that some cushion’s woodwork will not allow for the rubber to be cut back after the fall to the same size or larger as was the case with this table.

And customers comments about the work GCL Billiards Carried out

Geoff

I just wanted to drop you a line to thank you again for the work you did on my table.  We’ve played about a dozen frames on it so far and I am extremely pleased with it.  Playing on the new table is a completely different experience: it is very fast and the cushions are much more responsive than before.  Of course my position play is now all over the place because the white ball no longer ends up where it used to – but I am sure I will get used to the new speed. It has become, by quite some way, the best table that I have played on.

I look forward to seeing you for a restretch in a year’s time.

Best wishes

Steve

, NOW GONE another table scrapped , slate’s and frame recycled and cushions being relocated to another table.

We have a client who is looking to sell their old type full size table. NOW DISMANTLED AND RECYCLED .

We had no choice but to recycle the slates within the building trade and the frame to the furniture trade , but we managed to use the Steel Block Burroughs and watts cushions and pocket plate’s on another table which had very bad split woodwork , so like to think we have saved at least part of this table within the Cue sports trade.

As with all our clients, it is free to advertise tables.  We do this in the hope that any buyer will use the services of GCL Billiards to move the table and any work they may require on the table etc.  Please take note this table is in an UPSTAIRS LOCATION.  We have people skilled in the art of billiard fitting and only a qualified person should attempt to take this table apart.  A lot of damage or injury could be the result if unskilled labour is used and could cost you in the long run.  We have the right equipment to move the slates which in an upstairs location can be a nightmare for unskilled people to move.

Not too sure but the table may be a Burroughs and Watts make.  The leg and cushion design certainly looks from that maker although the last people to work on the table where Halls Billiards.

winner green mahoganyworn cloth supreme

These two tables are for a special low rental short 6  month period, we normally put brand new tables into establishments that we think will have a long rental period from us , so with the low rental agreement or high risk premises from damage ,we are not putting our brand new tables into these establishments  , so we are looking for tables to refurbish , if you have say a batch of 6 of these tables in need of restoring with new cushions and cloth we will also consider buying all 6 . all we ask is the cabinets are in good cosmetic order and the slate is in good condition .
Torn or stained cloth or dead rubber is not important we can replace these items .
Remember we are looking for COIN OPERATING tables only !

GCL Billiards to get repeat work for snooker tables in Leicester , 5 re-stretch bed cloths

Our client in Leicestershire renewed their faith in GCL Billiards in requesting for us to come back on the 12 month anniversay of the re-covers to re-stretch all 5 tables bed cloths and check for level etc  in this Establishment . we noted that two nets where worn so replaced these free of charge as a goodwill gesture .
We completed the work over two days , we did not want to rush the work , where many firms would have tried to complete in one day , although working on two at a time  ,we did each table as if we where working on just one and took our time to make sure all was correct before moveing onto the next table .
The Strachan 6811Tournament cloth is standing up to wear very well showing no excessive wear , another make was used last time we recovered them and I had to re-cover some end cushions when we did the re-stretch due to wear around the pocket openings  , so on this basis we always recommend the Strachan 6811 tournament over any other cloth .

I must say the tables are realy  looked after at this Venue , they get a Brush and iron 3 times a week . + extra for match play .
5 stretch bed cloths
All five tables are 1930/40s Riley Square legged  tables with 4 being Oak framed and one being Mahogany , they have in the past had all their cushions replaced by Rileys in the late 80s early 90s , so have modern mahogany cushions on them . We have recommended that they start to re-rubber the tables spread out  one table  every two years , this will mean in 10 years time all the tables will have had their rubber replaced and would mean only the extra cost of one table re-rubber every two years ontop of the re-covering costs , the cushions are around 25 years old now , so are due .
one table has slightly dished slates , and I have recommended that some adjustable slate supports ( Muntins) be added and by the simple turn of 6 bolts these can be adjusted to take the dip out of the slates by forceing pressure upwards under the slate in the centre ( only the table  fitter to adjust these ) .
One other recommendation would be to replace the coffin shades with the modern White light high frequency tube lighting as used in the Nottingham Snooker Academy . but they seem happy with the shades at the moment.
5 stretch bed 2

I would like to thank all my Clients who have arranged or are about to arrange for GCL Billiards for repeat work , it shows our clients trust in us to do the work correct and not rushed and not overcharge .
this is what GCL Billiards values are , to build a trusting relationship with our clients , and do every job as if it is GCL Billiards who is going back to do any work , we do it right because if it is done wrong  we risk the wrath of the client and also makes our job harder next time we re-cover plus our Reputation would get tarnished .
I always look back to the value’s of the first Master fitter who trained me many years ago Mick Robb , he and the other fitters after always said if a job is worth doing it is worth doing right .
My Old Boss John Hopkin ( now in his 80s and still going strong ) also had moral and Christian value’s , although I am not a practising Christian I always admired John for his ethic’s and beliefs and still do .

Back to Work after 10 day break in Tenerife , plus smart Phone for sale ( Don’t Laugh )

Well back to the grind of work , and we have had a few job’s come in while I have been away and a few enquiries for work going forward .
I must say the last year has been very busy and we hope the next year will be just as good , I was ready for the holiday and have recharged my batteries .
The next week kicks off with 5 stretch bed cloths and two pool table re-covers, then a full size table dismantle to bring downstairs , so enough to keep me busy nearly all week there , plus the following week we have Re-rubber + Re-cover of full size , more pool tables to re-cover , and a re-cover in Northampton for a new client with multiple tables and multi venue’s so that one may turn out to be a good for GCL Billiards , adding a new Client with that many tables is a Bonus , but take note we apply the same standards for clients with multi tables to one who has just one , we will never rush a job .
The van has been sign written and wrapped  while I was away on holiday and I must say it realy looks good , with it’s Large Pool ball livery on each side and a snooker theme on the back doors .
Many thanks to Adam Maltby at Blueprint for designing the wrap , I can highly recommend this firm  http://www.blueprintnottingham.co.uk/the-team/ who also sponser my local sports team the nottingham panthers ice Hockey Club of which I have been a long time supporter since they reformed in 1980 .

Call me old fashioned , but read the following . ( if it ain’t broke don’t fix it )
if it ain't broke don't fix it

Don’t Laugh , but I renewed my Phone contract just before I went away on holiday for a new fangled smart type touch screen phone a shiny new Sony Experia , well that did not last long , the sim was taken out and put back into my Trusty Nokia 6320i which is over 9 years old and still going strong after many drops from the van and even one underwater experience of a down stairs loo and then dried out in a bag of rice  , how people put up with those touch screen phone’s with multi tasks is beyond me , it always annoys me when I see young people and Adults playing games on them or are glued to the internet on a tiny screen  , young un’s should be playing Football and Cricket or playing cuesports , useing their eye’s for skills rather than these multi game computers put on a tiny screen . This is why so many Snooker club’s are closeing , young people hang around on street corners messageing the girl or guy 6 feet away or stay in bedrooms playing on X box’s or their smart and i phone’s on facebook , and why use the internet on them , when they can do that on a full sized screen on a lap top or PC. and not ruin their eyesight ? No wonder so  many young people wear glasses straining their eye’s at such a small screen  ! Doctors even have a name for the condition it’s called iPhoneitus and is the cause of many migraines and headache’s , but the phone industry is booming at the moment and I guess they have to keep bringing out phone’s with all these gimmicks on to keep it that way , todays invention is tommorows antique as they say .
all I want a phone for is to make and recieve calls and text plus Bluetooth hands free conection for the van , the 10 year old Nokia will do it to perfection .
I had to laugh though at the young salesman’s face  in the phone shop when I asked him for a sim card converter to put the tiny sim back  in the Nokia after just 3 days use .
So if anyone wants a Brand New BOXED ( only 3 day very light use ) Sony Experia latest model only been out Five weeks I have one for sale @ £150  . salesman says it will go for £150 easy and it is on O2 but has no sim  and in White. but it has a added data card 8GB which cost me extra .
