The problems trying to re-cloth an outdoor table that is not an outdoor table

I would like to explain without naming anyone why I turned this job down
a local person contacted me to see if i would re-cloth an outside table , I quoted for a speed cloth as this is the best cloth for outdoor use .
But on studying the photos I could see the wood work or shall we say Fibre board is swelling very badly , this means water has got into the construction of the fibre board and is welling it , all though my client insists this table has not got wet as it has a roof over it , but the surrounding damp and condensation is enough to effect the table like this .

As you can see this table has had some serious damp issues , this table is a DPT table I think , an early one that has removable plastic trims on the edge that clip on and off to reveal the bolts heads that you unscrew the cushions off .
very often these plastic trims go hard and break up on removal they lose all pliability and are best warmed with a hair dryer to remove to make them soft .
very often when you get a pool table that has been outside , the bolts rust into the cushion threads making it impossible to get the cushions off in severe cases .
I have had this in the past where once you start the job you are obligated to finish it and that could mean hours of extra work trying to get the cushions off and also having to replace the damaged plastic trims if you break them on removal .
this may mean ordering some ( IF THEY STILL MAKE THEM ) and revisiting using more time up that was not allowed for .
Modern tables do not have the trims anymore , and use a Allen key fixing bolt accessed underneath the top surround .
It is through past experience of re-clothing these tables which are not supposed to be outside even under cover .
that you can come across one that will give you grief if you attempt to re-cloth it .
so this one I’m afraid I have turned down , and you can see from the state of the top surround swelling my reasons for this .
it is very rare for me to turn a job down , especially if it is just down the road form me , but I have made the decision not to to save me any grief .
They may be Lucky and get someone to re-cloth it , but this table will not last long outside it will deteriorate very quickly over the Winter months .
If you need to have a table outdoors this one in my opinion is the best one to get , made from decking timber , it would still require being under cover , but damp will not effect it as much as a fibre board body table .

Any table placed outdoors even if the manufacturer says and markets it as an outdoor table , will suffer from damp issues , and metal bolts will start to rust especially the cushion fixing bolts and slide or claw nuts .
Over 47 years of fitting and re-clothing tables I have seen enough outdoor tables , in my time to know and inform of this problem of condensation damp and rain if no roof over .
When anyone asks me what table I recommend for outdoor , I often say NONE , but the above decking one seems to be one that will offer more protection body and top wood wise , but they will still suffer from bolt rusting through damp ingress .
Most people often retire their outdoor table for the winter put it in the garage or insulate it and put a good waterproof heavy duty weather proof tarpaulin over it .
You will always get condensation outside covered over roof table , in a UK Warm or cold climate though , even if you do take those measures .

I have passed on another local East midlands fitters name for this client to contact ,but stressed they must show them the same photos for their opinion . a 2nd opinion so to speak .

This table is based in the Havant Portsmouth Area . and is now available for sale from it’s private owner direct .
The price is £2500 for it as it stands with all equipment like scoreboard balls and rests .
You will then have to pay for dismantling loading , delivery unloading and set up by a qualified time served billiards fitter , and it will require a re-cloth , and maybe new nets and leathers depending on condition when inspected on strip down .
you may even think about a re-rubber if using it as a main feature match table in a club .
Very rare to find one in Oak which alone would draw attention to it and a main attraction to a club to play finals on .

Photo’s are just a taster better photos to follow soon from the seller .
very rare to find these now for sale and even rarer in Oak .

the last price I can find on these BCE tables in mahogany was £8000 plus delivery and set up , but they will now be closer to a Riley aristocrat price , but look again this one is OAK , you would have to pay extra for a Oak table .
They are sought after tables , prized as being one of the best steel tournament cushioned tables going
Even John Higgins sold his own match star table and replaced it with one of these BCE Westbury’s sourced by GCL billiards .
But John’s was a mahogany one , there are thousands made in mahogany , but only a few special ordered oak ones where manufactured so rare to find , and I think will not be up for sale long before someone spots it for what it is , and compares the price of say a new Riley Aristocrat , which are £14193.60p new today on the riley web site , for comparison ask Riley how much they will make a BCE Westbury for in Oak .
Then come back and bag this Bargain , this would make an ideal club match table .

Riley now market and make the BCE Westbury and have relaunched it and advertised it as the ,

BCE WESTBURY

The BCE Westbury Snooker Table; 1982 – 1992. As used at the World Professional Snooker championships and other televised events.

BCE are re-launching the iconic BCE Westbury Snooker Table as used by the WPBSA between 1982 – 1992 when the motivating factor was, the table selected for these WPBSA events was the best in its class.

Two re-cloths a year , this is ideal Summer and Winter leagues , be the envy of other teams in the league
who maybe playing on old worn out tables , dead cushions , slow cloths , and supplied and serviced slot machine mechanics who have no clue how to maintain a cue sports table .
If you wanted some one to service your car you would not employ a Kitchen installer , the same can be said for Cue sports tables , a Time served billiards fitter will maintain a table much better than a fruit machine mechanic , so arrange your pool table rental from the Experts here at GCL billiards , time served fitter Geoff Large started working on pool tables in the mid 1970’s , so has now been in this industry over 47 years as we speak and still showing no signs of retiring .

A brand new Supreme winner picked up from near Manchester at the factory this morning and installed this afternoon .

This club has new Pool teams entered into leagues .
and they wanted a brand new supreme winner with the back up of a professional firm like GCL billiards to maintain it to that high standard they expect .

Closing for a week from 10th September 2022

I am away for a week in Cornwall from the 10th of September , I am taking the Saab out for a long run , I bought this three years ago as a reaching the age of 65 present from my Wife , and have not had the time due to being so busy to use it often , it only has 16800 on the clock from new and its 13 years old this year , my daughter is manning the fort while we are away with her dogs , but will not be answering phone calls or emails while we are away .
I have work booked in right up to 17th of October

Those that are booked know who they are and those looking to book work in , on their snooker or pool tables , will have to wait until after October 17th .
I am still working full time until 2024 at this time I will be 70 Years old , but after March 2024 will go part time 3 days a week or one week on one week off .
I do not do upstairs work anymore when it comes to installing tables , so if you have a table that you require getting up or down stairs , please try some of the other time skilled fitters that are based around the UK , if you are not sure who to use , I will guide you .
Although if you get the table in the room We can still do the work of set up providing you have not placed the slates where the table is going to be sited .
A common occurrence to those not thinking that the poor fitter has to move them before he can erect the frame .
We only like moving slate once in a day .
we always ask people to store in order the slate 1.2.3.4.5 or reversed , upright like a door playing surface face out , against a wall
like this photo below .

If you are based in a City centre then unless you have parking outside unrestricted for a large transit sized van we cannot quote for work , we are finding it impossible to do some work when you have no parking outside for the entire Day .
and our van will not fit in a multi storey car park due to height if van .
I have turned some work down in Leicester Nottingham and Birmingham and Derby city centres because of this .
I also do not do London anymore , the fact it takes a long time to just get in and out means it is not feasible to take on .
Some just inside the M25 are still ok though .

Regardless of rumours circulating in the trade of billiards fitting , that I have retired or retiring , this is not true , I am still relocating full size snooker tables from ground floor to Ground floor , I am going to take it easy a bit after I am 70 years old that was always the plan , I am a young 70 years old though and played sports until I was 40 , I have looked after myself to a point , my father before me was the same , he never looked his age until he got over 80 .
It would take some illness to stop me working in the Billiards trade I have come to love .

Riley Aristocrat steel match cushioned table installed this week in Derbyshire and why I do not do stair work with slates anymore .

We had an install upstairs , now I do not do upstairs or basements anymore due to my age ( 68 ) , and a back that has failed many times over the 46 years I have been fitting , so the client got the builders to do the lifting of the slate upstairs as he had specifically asked for me to fit the table due to my years in the trade and what he has read and heard about my fitting and ethics on workmanship , and therefore I assembled the frame and fitted the cloth and did the levelling work before the slates where placed on the frame .

NEVER put slates on an unlevelled table and then send for a fitter , as the frame will bend to the shape of the floor and you end up taking the slates off and reshooting the frame level again .

this way of fitting using the builders to lift the slate upstairs , my back lasts and I will be doing re-clothing for a few years yet , well into my 70s and maybe even into my 80s , we had an old fitter at the firm I used to work for , Elston & Hopkin Billiards ltd of Nottingham , that was doing fitting into his 80’s so it is not unheard of .

Don’t get me wrong I still take on table moves ground floor to ground floor and man handle slates but no stair work for me now .
so if you still require a full size snooker table move from ground floor to ground floor , I am still doing this .

The cloth of choice for this table was Hainsworth Precision on the bed and Hainsworth smart on the cushions , the reason for this is , extra fast cloth for the balls to roll on the bed , and thicker cushions to so they wear better , especially around pocket openings where ball is directed to and therefore wears out quicker , imagine what would happen if you put the thinner finer napped precision on the cushions , it would wear out very fast .
so most Time served Billiard fitters will recommend a thicker cloth on the cushions when using a match or precision cloth as the main bed cloth choice .

Work coming in , but some cloth colours and grade hard to get hold of at the moment .

We are having some difficulty in getting hold of some grades of cloth especially when you order some preferential choice of colours .

this is not a fault of GCL Billiards but a back demand from the Covid period of the last two years and pressure on the manufacturers of the cloth to full fill orders already in on a back log ,
this results in cloth they have ins tock being rushed out as back orders , and a shortage of ready made kits cut to size to be dispatched on more recent ordering , lets take purple for instance , today I ordered a 8ft snooker set , and was told 26th of August they will have some ready , so I had to explain this to my client who understands and has accepted a date in September for his work to be done on his table .
Sometimes you may be wishing to have your table done ASAP , but if the cloth is not available from the manufacturers then we have to have an alternative colour or maybe be lucky and we have some on our own racking of stock as I do keep a supply of the most in demand cloth .
or wait for the lead time we are given which is only an estimate and cannot be set in stone that cloth will be dispatched on a given date .
this applies to all makes of cloth and grades .
This week I am expecting an order for grey 7ft pool Hainsworth match cloth that I ordered 6 weeks ago .
just like the building trade coming out of Covid has led to a shortage of goods , and we have also had some price increases too , so some may be shocked on quotes given say two or three months ago to suddenly find up to 15% price increase has been put on cloth and other overheads .

Working at Butlins all week next week , away from phone and emails until Friday evening .

I am working at Skegness Butlins re-clothing multi tables in the green Baize on site until Friday
